Valentine’s Day is upon us, and it’s time to dive head first into all things chocolate. There’s something so comforting about a steaming cup of hot chocolate, especially when it is decadent and rich, which this homemade hot chocolate definitely is. No powdered mixes or boiling water needed. Just a few ingredients and if you’re really looking to make something special, homemade marshmallows put this hot chocolate over the top. You can make this hot chocolate on the stovetop or in a slow cooker. It makes enough to share, so invite some friends and pull out your cutest mugs. Gather your favorite romantic comedy, a fuzzy blanket, and savor some wintery moments and share some hot chocolate with your Valentine.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

Serves 8
Ingredients
6 cups 2% milk
2 cups heavy cream
½ cup granulated sugar
6-8 ounces good quality semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (Use 8 ounces if you like yours extra rich.)
¼ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Directions
Combine ingredients in a Dutch Oven or large saucepan over medium-low heat, whisking until all ingredients are combined and melted. Cover and reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for a few hours, stirring every 30-45 minutes, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pan. (Serve anytime you like throughout that time. Cover and refrigerate leftovers.)
Serve with homemade marshmallows or whipped cream.
**Slow-Cooker method: Combine all ingredients in slow cooker set on low heat for 4-6 hours or high heat for 2-4 hours, stirring every hour or so.
