Looking for a perfect indoor activity to enjoy with the little ones in your life? Or maybe just an inexpensive, homemade holiday gift for the nieces and nephews? Homemade Playdough is the way to go. It’s not difficult, but it requires a little bit of attention. Best of all, it’s not crunchy and grainy like the homemade play dough I grew up with. Just keep in mind: If you don’t cook it long enough, your play dough will be sticky. Too long, and it’ll be too dry.
Homemade Playdough
Ingredients
Units Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup fine sea salt (NOT coarse)
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Food coloring
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan (do not turn on heat), whisk together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Gradually add water and oil, whisking until smooth.
- Add food coloring a few drops at a time until desired shade is reached. (Colors may deepen slightly during cooking process.) Continue whisking until mixture is velvety smooth before turning on heat.
- Place saucepan over low heat, stirring almost constantly with a silicone spatula until mixture gradually thickens. Cook until mixture is thickened into a dough, and is no longer sticky. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
- Turn dough out onto a counter and knead until smooth.
- Store in airtight containers.

Luckily it is safe to eat. Not very tasty though! :)

We got to test this recipe for Aunt Mandy... It's AWESOME! Its a great texture (important in our home) and lasts so long! Can't beat a cheaper- better version of a staple boredom buster.
Thanks Aunt Mandy!
