Homemade Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

  • 6 cups 2% milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 6-8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped (Use 8 ounces if you like yours extra rich.)
  • 1/4 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a Dutch Oven or large saucepan over medium-low heat, whisking until all ingredients are combined and melted. Cover and reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for a few hours, stirring every 30-45 minutes, making sure to scrape the bottom of the pan. (Serve anytime you like throughout that time. Cover and refrigerate leftovers.)
  2. Serve with homemade marshmallows or whipped cream.

Notes

**Slow-Cooker method: Combine all ingredients in slow cooker set on low heat for 4-6 hours or high heat for 2-4 hours, stirring every hour or so.
