Homemade Playdough

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup fine sea salt (NOT coarse)
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan (do not turn on heat), whisk together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Gradually add water and oil, whisking until smooth.
  2. Add food coloring a few drops at a time until desired shade is reached. (Colors may deepen slightly during cooking process.) Continue whisking until mixture is velvety smooth before turning on heat.
  3. Place saucepan over low heat, stirring almost constantly with a silicone spatula until mixture gradually thickens. Cook until mixture is thickened into a dough, and is no longer sticky. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Turn dough out onto a counter and knead until smooth.
  5. Store in airtight containers.
