Classic Irish Brown Soda Bread

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 40 minutes
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Stir together the flours, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Add buttermilk gradually until a stiff dough forms. (You may not need to use all of the buttermilk. Most of my loaves have needed all of it.)
  3. Sprinkle some flour on a baking sheet. Form dough into a ball and place on baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut an "X" into the top of the loaf.
  4. Bake 30-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  5. Allow to cool completely before slicing.
