Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Admittedly, I've never much been into celebrating Saint Patrick's Day in the past. However, this year I just happened to have an Irish food cookbook sitting on my shelf begging for attention (Real Irish Food by David Bowers), and I found an absolutely amazing pair of green Coach flats on clearance the other day, so I'm all set! No shamrocks or green beer around here. I did go ahead and make a batch of Green Velvet Whoopie Pies yesterday though, and let me tell you...they're wonderful.
Classic Irish Brown Soda Bread, for those who aren't familiar, is a traditional Irish quick bread that uses baking soda instead of yeast as its leavening agent. The buttermilk and baking soda react to make this bread rise. It is extremely simple to make...just 5 ingredients, and no rising or kneading is necessary.
Classic Irish Brown Soda Bread
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 40 minutes
- Total Time: 45 minutes
- Yield: 1 loaf 1x
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
- Stir together the flours, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Add buttermilk gradually until a stiff dough forms. (You may not need to use all of the buttermilk. Most of my loaves have needed all of it.)
- Sprinkle some flour on a baking sheet. Form dough into a ball and place on baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut an "X" into the top of the loaf.
- Bake 30-40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow to cool completely before slicing.
