Cranberry juice + Ginger Syrup + Cointreau + Gin + Vernors = My new favorite holiday drink. Bright flavors, not too sweet, not too tart, with just the right hit of spice from the ginger makes this a fantastic and festive cocktail for your holidays.
Vernors is essential.
Being from Michigan, I am VERY loyal to my Vernors being the ginger ale of choice in my life, so I feel compelled to warn you: do not substitute any other ginger ale in its place unless you absolutely must, and in that case, you may want to add a splash more ginger syrup to make up for it. If you haven't had Vernors before, you might think all ginger sodas are the same but truly Vernors has SO MUCH more prominent ginger flavor and superior bubbles than any others I've ever tasted. Trust me. You'll need about 6 ounces of Vernors per serving, so 1 can per two people is perfect. (P.S. This is not sponsored in any way. I just love Vernors!)
Syrup made from fresh ginger...
Making a ginger infused simple syrup is a worthwhile endeavor, in my opinion. It keeps really well in the fridge so you'll have it on hand all holiday season long. It's also amazing in iced tea, hot tea, lemonade, or drizzled on ice cream. All you'll need is fresh ginger, sugar, and water.
Merry & Bright.
Unsweetened cranberry juice brings a vibrant tartness that is accented beautifully by the orange flavor from the Cointreau. It's a festive and perfect pairing. Add in the dry gin (Beefeater or Tanqueray are widely available and work well, or choose something from a local distillery) and you've got yourself a well-rounded cocktail that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.Print
Cranberry Ginger Gin Fizz Cocktail
Bright and festive with the flavors of cranberry and ginger, this Cranberry Ginger Gin Fizz Cocktail is a perfect holiday drink for your next gathering.
2 fl oz unsweetened cranberry juice
1 fl oz ginger syrup (recipe follows)
1 fl oz Cointreau
1 fl oz Dry Gin (Beefeater works well)
12 oz can of Vernors ginger ale
For the ginger syrup-
1 fist-sized piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced very thin, equal to about ½ cup
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup water
Make the ginger syrup-
In a small saucepan, combine the fresh ginger slices, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat then reduce heat to maintain a simmer. Continue simmering until reduce by half, about 15-20 minutes.
Pour syrup through a fine mesh sieve to remove ginger pieces. Let cool to room temperature then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 weeks.
Prepare the cocktail-
In a mixing glass, combine cranberry juice, ginger syrup, Cointreau, and Gin over ice. Stir to combine.
Add ice to cocktail glasses and top with half of the drink mixture. Top with Vernors.
Serve immediately with whole cranberries for garnish, if desired.
